Handmade Details
handmade 9 La Nain rug is an impressive Persian carpet created for spacious and refined interiors. Measuring
340 × 404 cm, approximately 11’2″ × 13’3″, it offers the generous coverage needed to anchor a large living room, formal reception area, dining room or executive space.
The rug features a luminous ivory field decorated with a highly detailed central medallion, graceful floral vines, traditional Persian arabesques and delicate silk highlights. Its soft blue, grey, cream and muted green palette gives the carpet a calm, sophisticated presence while preserving the intricate visual character for which Nain rugs are admired.
Classic Central Medallion Composition
At the centre of the rug is a large circular medallion composed of multiple decorative layers. The design begins with a finely detailed floral core and expands outward through scalloped outlines, geometric divisions and delicate blue-toned petals.
The carefully arranged layers create depth without making the centre appear visually heavy. Soft blue and grey accents distinguish the medallion from the ivory background, allowing it to become the focal point of the room while remaining elegant and understated.
Above and below the main medallion, smaller decorative pendants extend along the central axis. This traditional medallion-and-pendant structure strengthens the symmetry of the composition and visually connects the upper and lower sections of the rug.
Detailed Floral Field and Persian Arabesques
The ivory field is filled with scrolling vines, blossoms, palmettes, leaves and curved arabesque forms. Rather than appearing randomly placed, every motif is carefully arranged around the central medallion to create a balanced and symmetrical composition.
The floral elements gradually become denser toward the corners, where elaborate corner spandrels frame the central field. This transition gives the design a natural sense of movement, leading the eye from the medallion toward the outer borders.
Fine outlines and delicate silk floral details add clarity and subtle brightness to selected areas of the pattern. Under changing natural or interior light, these highlights may reflect light differently from the surrounding surface, allowing individual motifs to become more visible.
Soft Ivory, Blue and Grey Colour Palette
One of the most distinctive qualities of this Nain rug is its restrained and highly versatile colour combination. The main ivory background creates an open and luminous appearance, while powder blue, pale grey, charcoal, cream and subtle green details introduce contrast without overwhelming the design.
This refined palette works especially well in interiors decorated with:
- Cream, beige, white or light grey upholstery
- Natural oak, walnut or dark wood furniture
- Silver, chrome, glass or brushed-metal details
- Classic Persian, European or transitional furniture
- Contemporary rooms with a soft neutral colour scheme
Because the colours are calm and balanced, the rug can complement an already decorated room or serve as the main decorative foundation in a more minimalist interior.
Traditional Multi-Border Structure
The central composition is surrounded by a detailed system of main and guard borders. The widest border contains repeating floral motifs connected by curved vines, while narrower inner and outer borders introduce smaller patterns and fine linear details.
These layered borders create a strong architectural frame around the ivory field. They also distribute colour and detail evenly around the rug, ensuring that the design remains visually complete when viewed from any side of the room.
9 La Nain Weaving
The term 9 La refers to the structure traditionally used to classify the fineness of many Nain carpets. This construction allows the weaver to produce clearly defined floral motifs, curved outlines and detailed borders while creating a rug suitable for display in a substantial interior.
The refined pattern, carefully controlled symmetry and silk-highlighted floral details demonstrate the precision required to produce a large Nain carpet of this type. Minor variations in individual lines and motifs are natural characteristics of handmade weaving and contribute to the rug’s unique identity.
Generous Size for Large Interiors
Measuring 340 × 404 cm, this rug covers approximately
13.74 square metres. Its broad, nearly square proportions make it particularly suitable for rooms where a narrower rectangular carpet would leave too much uncovered floor space.
Recommended placements include:
- A large formal living room or reception room
- A complete seating arrangement with sofas and armchairs
- A spacious dining room with a centrally positioned table
- A luxury master bedroom
- A private library or executive office
- A boutique hotel, gallery or formal commercial interior
In a living room, the rug is large enough for the main furniture pieces to sit fully or substantially on its surface, creating a unified and intentional seating arrangement. When used beneath a dining table, the furniture dimensions should be checked to ensure that the chairs remain on the rug when pulled away from the table.
A One-of-a-Kind Persian Carpet
A handmade rug of this size is more than a decorative accessory. It becomes one of the defining architectural elements of the room, connecting furniture, colours and surrounding materials within a single visual composition.
Unlike machine-manufactured carpets, handmade Persian rugs may show slight variations in dimensions, pattern alignment, surface texture and individual motifs. These differences are natural results of the weaving process and help distinguish an individually woven carpet from a mass-produced floor covering.
